About Us

SPEAR Survival is veteran owned and operates in Texas. Our mission is to help our fellow Texans become more capable and self reliant by providing them professional training via knowledgeable instructors.

The basis of our training was inspired by the Navy SERE (survival, evasion, resistance, escape) program that our founder is a graduate of.  However, we do not teach certain principles taught by SERE, as they are protected by clearances and contract.

Our instructors have conducted volunteer training for Texas Park & Wildlife, wilderness leadership schools, adventure tour companies, and even the University of Texas at Brownsville. We’ve trained civilians, military personnel, law enforcement and other first-responders how to survive in varying environments of the wilderness.

We hope to expand our operations outside of Texas, and grow enough to widen our reach and services to charities that we feel proficiently benefit the local and national community, and especially veterans. We are dedicated to helping others, to doing good, and helping others do the same.

Owner, Lead InstructorOwner/Lead Survival Instructor – Eric

An honorably discharged Marine, now a certified Texas firefighter & EMT who holds 8 different FEMA certifications including Active Shooter and Community Preparedness. A graduate of the U.S. Navy SERE program (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape), he was taught advanced techniques in wilderness survival (among other fun stuff). His training also includes, but is not limited to: surveillance/counter-surveillance, water survival/rescue swimming/HUET, and confined space/high angle rescue. He feels his calling is to serve the general good by being skilled and capable, and to help his fellow veterans when & where he can.

Dr Merriwether Wild edibles & foraging instructor – Dr. Mark “Merriwether”

Merriwether conducts all of our wild edibles courses and is considered one of the foremost experts on foraging in America.  He is the creator of the “Foraging Texas” website, and Author of the “Idiot’s Guide to Foraging“. Research chemist by day, he takes a scientific yet holistic approach to wild edibles. You will be hard pressed to find someone who can talk about plants on a cellular & chemical level as well as he.

His small classes fill up FAST due to his passion for the subject of wild edibles.  If a space is available, grab it.

Duffy snaresLead volunteer – Duffy

We’ve never met another person so eager to soak up knowledge and survival training. With his always positive, can-do attitude, he’s the guy you want on your team when the chips are down. An avid member of the GORUCK community, and leader among “GRT’s”, Duffy teaches others to “embrace the suck”. While he may be a protegé in wilderness survival, he is in fact a mentor to many when it comes to physical and mental toughness.

He lives by the warrior ethos, and he’s a swell guy to have a beer and chat with. If you get a chance, pro-tip: Texas beer.
